Microsoft has started testing or rolling out a new message/alert box in Windows 11’s inbox Mail & Calendar. If you’re subscribed to Microsoft 365 and open the Mail app in Windows 11, you will notice a new alert titled “In 2024, Windows Mail and Calendar are becoming Outlook”. The alert should also start showing up in free Outlook accounts.
The shift aims to present a modern, simplified design alongside the latest new Outlook for Windows features.
In a support document, which is accessible only to Microsoft 365 subscribers, Microsoft noted the plans to begin the migration process for existing Windows 11 users of Mail, Calendar, and People apps to the new Outlook for Windows. Starting in 2024, all new Windows 11 devices will come with the new Outlook for Windows.
The transition process is expected to be user-friendly. Supported account holders will see a toggle in their current Windows Mail and Calendar apps, prompting them to “Try the new Outlook.” This will initiate the download of the new Outlook for Windows, which may take several minutes to complete.
After installation, Windows Mail or Calendar will close, and the new Outlook for Windows will open. Users will then have the option to import their accounts and settings.
Microsoft assures that users who prefer the existing Mail and Calendar can opt to return to these applications by clicking on the toggle in the new Outlook for Windows. The company encourages feedback on the new Outlook experience to address potential improvements before the Windows Mail and Calendar support ends in 2024.
To smoothen the user experience, Microsoft will automatically download and install the new Outlook for Windows when users launch Windows Mail and Calendar in the coming months. Users will be notified about this launch before the download and installation process begins
Starting in 2023, users will be launched directly into the new Outlook for Windows, with the option to toggle back to Windows Mail and Calendar.
